When to visit Strasbourg

Winter: Winter is the most popular time to visit Strasbourg and experience its famous Christmas markets. Over a million tourists come to Strasbourg each year between November 26 and December 26! Come to enjoy the markets, mulled vin chaud (hot wine), and traditional Christmas cookies (bredele). During this period, most locals avoid the center of Strasbourg and tend to stay home as much as possible. In January and February, the city recovers from its busiest tourist season and this is the quietest period of the year.

Spring: Spring is beautiful - when it’s not raining. 2024 was the rainiest spring in Strasbourg on record, but during the few days of sun we enjoyed lots of Magnolia trees in bloom and drinks on terraces! There are few tourists from March to May.

Summer: A great time to visit if you don’t mind the heat (especially in August). There are quite a few tourists but it is a beautiful season with lots of flowers, green parks, and fresh lakes to swim in. This is also an exciting time to visit vineyards along the Alsace Wine Route since Alsace is most famous for its chilled white wines!

Fall: The season with the least amount of tourists, fall is a great time to visit and enjoy the leaves changing color, cooler temperatures, and the grape harvest in the region. It can be rainy, but usually temperatures don’t get too cold until December.

  • 4 days to one week is perfect for a visit to Strasbourg. The longer you stay, the more time you will have to explore the region outside of the city itself including day trips to the Alsace Wine Route, picturesque towns such as Colmar, and even excursions into the Black Forest of Germany.

  • The short answer is yes! Depending on your other destinations, it is easy to travel in and out of Strasbourg thanks to the French rail system and several nearby airports (Basel, Frankfurt, & Paris).

  • It depends what you would like to do when you are here, but the likely answer is no. You will easily be able to access all of Strasbourg by foot, tram, bus, and bike, and the surrounding region by train and bus.
